University History The roots of the University of South Wales can be traced back to 1841 when it was established as the Mechanical Institute. Subsequently, the University of Wales, Newport, was named after the new Mechanical Institute. In 1913, the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines came into existence.
The school of mining evolved into the polytechnic of Wales, achieving university status as the University of Glamorgan in 1992. Finally, in April 2013, the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport, led to the formation of the University of South Wales (USW).
